The first fire is lit. A small "preheat fire" is maintained for about 6 hours to slowly warm the kiln and pots. |
| Over time the coal bed will grow and the fire will gradually become bigger. |

Lots of wood is collected for wood fires. Wood is stacked and dried for about 8 months before being burnt. The average fire burns about a cord of wood over the 40 hour firing. |
